Teach me to Pray
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
One thing I constantly have to say in class or while hanging out with the kids, “English – you must speak English”. This is a rule at the Academy for many reasons, mainly because a person who speaks English well is far more likely to succeed in South Africa (a country where there are 11 official languages and the National Anthem is sung 5 verses in 5 different languages). So as much as I love to hear and learn Xhosa, it’s important to encourage them in speaking English, along with the fact that they could be making fun of me or planning something nefarious in Xhosa and I would never know the difference. The one time, however, that I allow them to speak in Xhosa is when I ask if anyone wants to pray – they will raise their hand enthusiastically and then ask, “may I pray in Xhosa”… “yes you may pray Xhosa”. It blesses me to listen even though I don’t understand a word.
Yesterday I began to pick up a pattern to the way they begin their prayers and asked them to teach me…
Yanga nkosi ngevumthandazo, wabankwana aboncinci, ngenxo koi Yesu Krestu nkosi yethu.
May God hear the prayers of the little children because of Jesus Christ our King.
There was something sweet to me about the way they see themselves as “little children” even though they have been through far more than you or I could imagine in their short lives. In fact we are all “little children” in the presence of our King – right?
Pray for: The kids as the go back to their townships for 2 week break - for protection and safety and that they make good choices. Pray for me as I prepare to finish at the Academy and head to Tanzania.

Long walk on a short beach
It’s been a long week and I had a great desire to get out and get away today, but where to? I don’t know many places that would be a good escape and I longed for something familiar, something comfortable. I jumped in a car and started heading towards Cape Town maybe a movie at the Harbor or something? There are only a few roads that I know and when I hit a detour heading into Cape Town I was a little worried. But that detour brought me right to a charming little beach outside of Cape Town (Lagoon Beach). The beach, the ocean… the place I always go when I want to be near to my God, rejoice with Him or just cry out to Him. What a gift!
So today, I took a long walk on a short beach, walking up and down several times reflecting about my time so far and wondering how God will use the time I’ve dedicated to this journey. No answers, just a comfortable, familiar afternoon with my Heavenly Father in the heart of His amazing creation… walking down the beach with Table Mountain towering over the harbor, it was a beautiful sight to behold and I even found a piece of sea glass.
"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came." John F. Kennedy
Pray for: God ordained moments with each kid before I leave & strength for the journey ahead (finish well at Bridges & mission to Tanzania)
My prayer for you: That you would have a sweet moment with your Heavenly Father today.

Because of you HIV/AIDS
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4
This was left behind by a young girl in one of my classes, I'm starting to realize that often they will leave notes and things behind because they actually want me to read them. I've typed it just as it was written:
I had it all
but it went down
the drain
I couldn’t breath
my eyes were full of tears
my heart was cold
My parents were taken
away from me
friends, anyone I cared for
Because of you I have nothing
but I want to let you know
I’m not afraid of you
Because of you HIV/AIDS
I’m strong
you have not destroyed me
and for that you will not bring me down
All you do is give me strength
to fight you so bring it on!!!Sunday, May 23, 2010

Hurry Miss Heather it's a bomb!
"For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them" Matthew 18:20
First let me say, to all my teachers a heart-felt apology for being a pain in the “bum” and my gratitude to each and everyone of you! That goes to all of you who teach and are reading this blog… thank you for what you do. That being said, today was my turn to laugh!
One of my duties is to teach computers on Mondays and Tuesdays to Grade 8, 9, 10,11 & 12 learners here at Bridges Academy. I quickly realized that I needed to start with square one, so I am teaching them to type – that’s right Mrs. Whimmer – Heather Mason is teaching typing to High School kids, and English is not their first language and still difficult for many of them! We are using a typing program that works you through the keyboard and times you at different phases (I offer chocolate to the fastest and most improved as a little incentive). Today as I started my grade 9 class, Lazola started calling my name while I was helping another student, I could hear a nervous sound in his voice so naturally I thought he broke the computer. “Miss Heather! Miss Heather! Come quick I think it is a bomb (which sounded like bum when he said it)! I jumped over to where he was sitting and he was holding the laptop up to his ear, then I realized he had accidently turned on the metronome sound that you can use to guide your typing – it did sound a bit like a bomb ticking. It took a moment for the humor to set in, but when I sat down at my desk I started laughing so hard I could barely contain myself, which started them all laughing as well! A bomb in his computer – I love it!
My lesson in all this, we are on this journey together. I have given them much to laugh at… my attempts at Xhosa, my dancing, my funny American sayings and they have allowed me to laugh with them as well!
Pray for:
- · Continued joy here at Bridges Academy (even with non-stop wind & rain)!
- · The students to grasp computer skills as they are essential to go on to University or obtain a good job.
- · Give praise and thanks for all teachers, here at the Academy and throughout the world!

Ncuma!
- Nomokolwa's health, provision for her kids to go back to school and that she would get involved in the HIV support group run through the CHE's
- CHE's in Sweet Home that God would empower them as they go and visit with many others like Nomokolwa in their community
- For the rain to stop (not just because I don't like it) it creates horrible living conditions in the townships

Upon Arrival
“…May your God whom you serve continually, rescue you! ~Daniel 6:16
I have arrived at Bridges of Hope Academy in Franschhoek, South Africa (just outside of Cape Town). It took my breath away to see the new school building on this beautiful property, knowing that this is a chance for “rescue” for 50 students who otherwise would likely not have an education or a safe place to live. It took my breath away because I’ve been here twice before, once before the school had even begun and once when the school was held in the existing bed & breakfast on the property… beautiful, but hard to manage a learning environment. God has provided Bridges of Hope, with the visionaries to dream this and the provision to build it.
Then… I walked into the building upon my arrival and wow, the hugs and smiles and joyful greetings! There are 12 students here while the others are back in their township for “Freedom Day” a national holiday. Today was my first full day here. After little sleep I met the kids at the school (I stay across the way at the retreat center) and played games with them and then tackled my fear of driving in South Africa as I drove kids into town to walk around (driving on the wrong side of the car & road… little left, big right!). I was blessed to be with them, to see how they look after one another, to hear their desires and goals for the future and to experience their sweet joy. I am certain that God has more to teach me, than I them in these next few months, I pray that I will wholeheartedly give of myself during my time here and that I would be open to receive all that God has for me.
Monkey Story: On the way back from town as I was intently focusing on driving an not killing us all, the kids start yelling with great excitement MONKEY, MONKEY, BIG MONKEY – it took me a bit to discern what they were saying through their accents (I guess I’m actually the one with the accent) then I pulled the car over right in time to see a big monkey head off into the hills – what a sight!
Well, it is 2:00 AM here and even thought I made myself stay up until midnight I can’t seem to sleep well, that is one thing you can pray for. Also pray for my time with these twelve and then the preparation to Teach, train, disciple and coach the kids and staff as they all return later this week. I will post some pictures in the next couple of days.
Many Blessings!
Heather
